5 TIPS FOR SAFE EXTENSION CORD USAGE
To ensure optimal safety when using an extension cord, keep the following tips in mind:
1. NEVER PULL ON THE CORD
When plugging an extension cord into an outlet, you will need to be sure that the plug is pushed in all the way and firmly connected. Once you are done using the cord, always remove it from the outlet by grabbing the head/plug of the cord. Never pull on the cord to remove the plug from the outlet as this can cause serious damage to the prongs, outlet, or cord.
2. SELECT A PROPERLY RATED CORD
Extension cords are available in different ratings, making some units more suitable for certain applications or devices than others. The cord you select should never exceed the amperage or wattage ratings of the items you are powering as this excessive electrical draw can be hazardous.
3. USE THREE-PRONG CORDS
When using extension cords, you should only use units with three prongs as this will ensure that the items plugged into them are properly grounded. Never remove the ground pin/bottom prong to fit the cord into an old outlet as this will drastically increase the risk of electrical fires and electrocution.
4. AVOID WATER AND HEAT SOURCES
Extreme heat or high moisture levels can cause significant damage to indoor extension cords, increasing the risk of electrical fires and shock. If you need to use an extension cord in a hot and/or damp area, you will need to select an outdoor unit that is rated for this environment.
5. DO NOT PLUG AN EXTENSION CORD INTO ANOTHER EXTENSION CORD
Extension cords should never be plugged into another extension cord as this can cause both cords to overheat or become overloaded. If your current cords are not long enough for your work environment or home, you will need to purchase a longer cord to maintain optimal safety and performance.
